Abstract
This study was conducted to identify factors affecting smoking cessation attempts according to gender in adolescents who smoke. This was a cross sectional study using the results of the Youth Health Behavior Survey (2020). The participants were 2,437 smoking adolescents enrolled in middle and high school. The data was analyzed by Rao-Scott ¥ö2-test and logistic regression analysis with SPSS/WIN 25.0. Most of the students started smoking when they were in middle school, and the smoking cessation rate was 69.4%. There were significant differences in intense physical activity (OR=1.567, p<.001), depression (OR=1.343, p=.022), suicidal ideation (OR=0.638, p=.006), and first smoking period (OR=2.372, p=.011) and smoking amount (OR=0.584, p<.001) in male adolescents. For female adolescents, stress (OR=1.744, p=.037) and first smoking period were elementary school (OR=5.317, p=.005), middle school (OR=6.213, p=.001), and high school (OR=4.439, p=.008) was significant variable. According to the results of the differences in smoking cessation attempts according to the gender of smoking adolescents, we propose a smoking cessation program that promotes physical activity for male adolescents and a counseling program that focuses on internal emotion such as stress for female adolescents.
